Canada Post sets one national list for the whole country rather than following each province's employment laws. That is why Remembrance Day and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation are no-mail days even in provinces where they are not statutory holidays for other employers, such as Ontario and Quebec, and why Easter Monday, a working day for most private businesses, is on the list too.

Provincial and territorial holidays

Canada Post also closes on certain regional holidays, but only in the province or territory concerned. Mail moving between regions keeps flowing; it is the local collection and delivery that stops.

The first Monday in August, Monday, August 3, 2026, is a no-mail day almost everywhere under one name or another; Quebec and Yukon are the exceptions on that date (Yukon's day off is Discovery Day two weeks later).

Holidays when mail is still delivered

Some well-known provincial holidays are regular mail days. Canada Post's schedule states that mail is collected and delivered as usual on:

  • Family Day (the third Monday of February) in every province that observes it;
  • Louis Riel Day in Manitoba;
  • Islander Day in Prince Edward Island.

These are statutory holidays for many workers in those provinces, so a business or government office you are sending to may be closed even though the letter carrier comes. If an item needs a signature, plan for someone to be there to receive it.

Christmas and New Year's 2026

With Christmas Day on a Friday and Boxing Day on a Saturday, Canada Post observes Boxing Day on Monday, December 28, 2026. That makes a four-day stretch, Friday to Monday, with no regular delivery. Mail resumes on Tuesday, December 29, and stops again for New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027, a national holiday.

Canada Post posts its recommended "mail by" dates for holiday cards and parcels separately each season; they had not been published for 2026 when this page was checked. Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve are not holidays, but individual post offices can set shorter hours on those days, so check the hours of your outlet in Canada Post's Find a Post Office tool.

Post offices inside stores

Many post offices are counters inside pharmacies, grocery stores and convenience stores. Canada Post's holiday rule only closes its corporate post offices: a counter run by a private business opens according to the host store's hours. If the pharmacy is open on Boxing Day or Easter Monday, you may be able to buy stamps, drop off a prepaid parcel or pick up a package there, even though no mail is collected or delivered that day.

The delivery notice card or the tracking page names the pickup location, so you can check that store's own holiday hours before you go.

When a holiday falls on a weekend

Canada Post's schedule says a holiday that falls on a Saturday or Sunday "may be applied to the next business day". That is what happens to Boxing Day in 2026. It matters for deadlines too: if you are mailing a cheque, a form or a payment that must arrive by a certain date, count only the days Canada Post actually delivers. Many government deadlines are met by the postmark or by the date received, depending on the program, so check the rule with the organization you are writing to. For the Canada Revenue Agency's own rules on payments that fall due on a holiday, see bank holidays in Canada.

2027: what to expect

Canada Post has not posted its 2027 table yet. The national list is the same each year, so these are the expected 2027 no-mail days for the holidays with fixed rules: New Year's Day (Fri, Jan 1, 2027), Good Friday (Fri, Mar 26, 2027), Easter Monday (Mon, Mar 29, 2027), Victoria Day (Mon, May 24, 2027), Canada Day (Thu, Jul 1, 2027), Labour Day (Mon, Sep 6, 2027), the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Thu, Sep 30, 2027), Thanksgiving (Mon, Oct 11, 2027) and Remembrance Day (Thu, Nov 11, 2027).

In 2027 Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so both will move to weekdays; which ones will be confirmed when Canada Post updates its schedule.

Weekend parcels and the 2026 agreements

On June 1, 2026, Canada Post's urban and rural and suburban carriers voted to accept new collective agreements that run until January 31, 2029. Canada Post said the agreements allow "affordable weekend parcel delivery". Weekend parcel service is separate from the holiday schedule above: on a statutory holiday there is no regular collection or delivery, and any changes to parcel delivery days are announced by Canada Post.
