TSX market holidays in 2026
On these days Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX), TSX Venture Exchange (TSXV) and TSX Alpha Exchange are closed all day. TMX Group, which runs the exchanges, publishes the list on its trading calendar and confirms each closure in a short notice a few days before it. The 2026 notices for Canada Day, the Civic Holiday, Labour Day and Thanksgiving also closed the Montréal Exchange, TMX's derivatives market.
| Holiday | Date | Countdown |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thu, Jan 1, 2026 | — |
| Family Day | Mon, Feb 16, 2026 | — |
| Good Friday | Fri, Apr 3, 2026 | — |
| Victoria Day | Mon, May 18, 2026 | — |
| Canada Day | Wed, Jul 1, 2026 | — |
| Civic Holiday | Mon, Aug 3, 2026 | — |
| Labour Day | Mon, Sep 7, 2026 | — |
| Thanksgiving | Mon, Oct 12, 2026 | — |
| Christmas Day | Fri, Dec 25, 2026 | — |
| Boxing Day (observed; Dec 26 is a Saturday) | Mon, Dec 28, 2026 | — |
Boxing Day falls on a Saturday in 2026, so TMX lists the closure "in lieu of Boxing Day" on the following Monday, Monday, December 28, 2026. Christmas Day is a Friday, which makes Christmas a four-day break for the market: the last full session is Wednesday, December 23, the Thursday is a half day and trading resumes on Tuesday, December 29.
Early close: Christmas Eve
TMX's 2026 calendar flags Christmas Eve, Thursday, December 24, 2026, as a shortened day: TSX and TSXV close at 1:00 p.m. ET and TSX Alpha at 1:30 p.m. ET. That is the same pattern TMX announced for December 24, 2025, when its holiday operating schedule also had Montréal Exchange equity, index and ETF derivatives close at 1:00 p.m. and interest rate derivatives at 1:30 p.m.
New Year's Eve is not on the 2026 list of early closes, so stocks are expected to trade a full session on Thursday, December 31. In 2025 the Montréal Exchange shortened only its interest rate derivatives session on December 31. TMX usually confirms the exact holiday hours for all its markets in a press release in early December; check it if you trade derivatives.
Holidays when the TSX is open
Several days that close banks, government offices or schools in parts of Canada are normal trading days on the TSX:
- Remembrance Day (November 11) and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (September 30). Both are federal holidays on which banks and the payment system close, so TMX treats them as "banking holidays": you can buy and sell, but no trade settles that day.
- Easter Monday. It is not on the TMX list, so the market opens even though federal public servants and Canada Post have the day off.
- Provincial holidays that aren't Ontario's, such as Quebec's Fête nationale (June 24), National Patriots' Day, St. Patrick's Day in Newfoundland and Labrador or Yukon's Discovery Day. The exchange follows Ontario's calendar plus the Civic Holiday.
- U.S. holidays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day and U.S. Thanksgiving. The TSX trades, but securities traded in U.S. dollars follow a special settlement schedule because U.S. banks are closed.
The reverse is also true: Family Day and the Civic Holiday close the TSX even though they are not federal holidays, because the exchange and most of its participants are in Ontario.
How settlement works around holidays
A trade on the TSX is settled (cash and shares actually change hands) one business day after the trade. A business day must be a day when both the exchange and the banks are open, so a holiday on either side pushes settlement back. TMX's 2026 settlement schedule shows the effect:
| Trade date | Settles on | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Tue, Nov 10, 2026 | Thu, Nov 12, 2026 | Remembrance Day is a banking holiday |
| Wed, Nov 25, 2026 | Fri, Nov 27, 2026 | U.S. Thanksgiving |
| Thu, Dec 24, 2026 | Tue, Dec 29, 2026 | Christmas Day and Boxing Day (observed) |
| Thu, Dec 31, 2026 | Mon, Jan 4, 2027 | New Year's Day and the weekend |
Settlement dates matter at year-end. A trade placed on Thursday, December 31 does not settle until January 4, 2027, so brokerages publish their own "last day to trade" for settlement within 2026, which investors use for tax-loss selling and contributions in kind. Check your brokerage's year-end notice, and the CRA for how the tax rules apply to you.
Regular trading hours
On an ordinary weekday the TSX and TSXV follow the same schedule, in Eastern time:
| Time (ET) | Session |
|---|---|
| 7:00 – 9:30 a.m. | Pre-open: orders can be entered but are not executed |
| 9:30 a.m. | Opening: matching orders trade at a single opening price |
| 9:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. | Continuous trading |
| 3:50 – 4:00 p.m. | Market-on-close imbalance period |
| 4:00 – 4:10 p.m. | Price movement extension (only if an imbalance remains) |
| 4:10 – 4:15 p.m. | Post-market cancel session |
| 4:15 – 5:00 p.m. | Extended trading, at the last sale price only |
Outside Ontario and Quebec the 9:30 a.m. opening bell rings at a different local time, and since November 2026 the gap changes with the seasons in more places, because British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba no longer move their clocks:
| City | Winter (Nov 1, 2026 – Mar 13, 2027) | Summer (from Mar 14, 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| St. John's | 11:00 a.m. | 11:00 a.m. |
| Halifax | 10:30 a.m. | 10:30 a.m. |
| Winnipeg | 9:30 a.m. | 8:30 a.m. |
| Regina, Calgary | 8:30 a.m. | 7:30 a.m. |
| Vancouver | 7:30 a.m. | 6:30 a.m. |

2027 TSX holidays: not yet published
TMX has not published its 2027 calendar yet; the current calendar shows only 2025 and 2026. Its list has been the same set of holidays every year, so the dates below are what to expect, worked out from each holiday's fixed rule. Treat them as provisional until TMX posts the official list.
| Expected closure | Date | Countdown |
|---|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Fri, Jan 1, 2027 | — |
| Family Day (third Monday of February) | Mon, Feb 15, 2027 | — |
| Good Friday (Easter is March 28, 2027) | Fri, Mar 26, 2027 | — |
| Victoria Day (Monday before May 25) | Mon, May 24, 2027 | — |
| Canada Day | Thu, Jul 1, 2027 | — |
| Civic Holiday (first Monday of August) | Mon, Aug 2, 2027 | — |
| Labour Day (first Monday of September) | Mon, Sep 6, 2027 | — |
| Thanksgiving (second Monday of October) | Mon, Oct 11, 2027 | — |
In 2027 Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so both will be replaced by weekdays. Which days TMX picks, and whether Christmas Eve (Fri, Dec 24, 2027) is a short session, will only be known when the 2027 calendar appears. New Year's Day 2028 is also a Saturday.
Common mistakes
- Assuming bank holidays close the market. Remembrance Day and September 30 close banks but not the TSX; orders placed that day trade normally and simply settle later.
- Assuming the TSX closes with Wall Street. U.S. holidays are trading days in Toronto, though volume in interlisted stocks is usually light.
- Forgetting the half day. An order meant for the close on December 24 must be in before 1:00 p.m. ET, not 4:00 p.m.
- Mixing up trade and settlement dates at year-end. A December 31 trade settles in January; see bank holidays in Canada for the payment-system closures that delay it.

What are the TSX trading hours?
