Before 2027: the Christmas long weekend
Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, so Fri, Dec 25 – Sun, Dec 27 is a long weekend in every province. Boxing Day falls on Saturday, December 26. Federally regulated workers and Ontario employees, for whom Boxing Day is a statutory holiday, normally get a substitute day: banks and payment systems close on Monday, December 28, 2026, making it a four-day weekend for many. New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027, then gives a second three-day weekend a week later.

Many employers give extra days by contract, so your own calendar may include more. See statutory holidays in Canada for the full rules and holiday pay.

Counts include only statutory holidays that land on a Friday or Monday in 2027. Thursday holidays and the Christmas weekend are covered below.
Bridge days: four days off for one
In 2027 several fixed-date holidays fall on a Thursday. Taking the Friday off as a vacation day gives a four-day weekend.
| Holiday | Day off | Applies in |
|---|---|---|
| Fête nationale Thu, Jun 24, 2027 | Fri, Jun 25, 2027 | Quebec |
| Canada Day Thu, Jul 1, 2027 | Fri, Jul 2, 2027 | Everywhere |
| National Day for Truth and Reconciliation Thu, Sep 30, 2027 | Fri, Oct 1, 2027 | Federal, BC, Manitoba, PEI, Yukon, NWT, Nunavut (optional in Alberta) |
| Remembrance Day Thu, Nov 11, 2027 | Fri, Nov 12, 2027 | Federal, BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, PEI, NL, territories |
Quebec workers have the best summer stretch: with the Fête nationale on Thursday, June 24 and Canada Day on Thursday, July 1, two vacation days (June 25 and July 2) give two four-day weekends back to back. Federal workers can pair September 30 with Thanksgiving: taking Friday, October 1 off gives four days, and Thanksgiving Monday follows ten days later.
For a longer break at the end of the year, Christmas Day 2027 is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday. Where both are holidays (federally regulated workers and Ontario), the paid days move to weekdays around them; elsewhere, Christmas moves to a substitute day or becomes holiday pay depending on the province. New Year's Day 2028 is also a Saturday.
Planning tips
- Book early for Victoria Day, Canada Day and Labour Day. They are the busiest travel weekends of the warm season; campgrounds in provincial parks often open reservations months ahead.
- Check whether the day applies to you. If you work in Ontario but your employer is federally regulated, you get Remembrance Day and September 30 but not Family Day as a statutory right.
- School calendars differ. School boards add their own PD days and breaks, so children may be off on days you are not, and vice versa.
- Mail and banks: Canada Post and banks follow federal holidays, so a provincial long weekend such as Family Day does not stop payments between banks.
- Holiday pay: if you work on a statutory holiday you are usually owed premium pay or another day off. The rules depend on your province.
How holiday dates are set
Most long weekends are tied to a weekday rule rather than a date, which is why they always fall on a Monday: Family Day and its equivalents are the third Monday of February, Victoria Day is the Monday before May 25, the August holiday is the first Monday of August, Labour Day the first Monday of September and Thanksgiving the second Monday of October. Easter moves with the church calendar; in 2027 Good Friday is March 26. Fixed-date holidays such as Canada Day (July 1), September 30 and Remembrance Day (November 11) move around the week, which is what creates the Thursday bridges in 2027.
Looking further ahead, New Year's Day 2028 falls on a Saturday, so 2028 begins without the Friday long weekend that opens 2027. This page keeps the same address and is updated each year.
