The order of midnights across Canada
The last column shows each midnight in your time zone, so you can see when to call family in another province.
| Time zone and main places | Midnight (Jan 1) | Your time |
|---|---|---|
| Newfoundland time (UTC−3:30) St. John's, Gander, Corner Brook, the island of Newfoundland and southeastern Labrador | 03:30 UTC | — |
| Atlantic time (UTC−4) Halifax, Moncton, Fredericton, Saint John, Charlottetown, most of Labrador, Quebec's Lower North Shore | 04:00 UTC | — |
| UTC−5 Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec City, Thunder Bay, Winnipeg, Kenora, Iqaluit | 05:00 UTC | — |
| UTC−6 Calgary, Edmonton, Regina, Saskatoon, Yellowknife, Cranbrook, Rankin Inlet | 06:00 UTC | — |
| UTC−7 Vancouver, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George, Whitehorse, Cambridge Bay | 07:00 UTC | — |
All of these are winter offsets: Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces and Newfoundland fall back on November 1, 2026, and the rest of the country no longer changes its clocks.
What is different this year
Until 2025, New Year's arrived in six steps, one per traditional time zone. The 2026 time changes in the West rearranged the line-up:
- Winnipeg celebrates with Toronto. Manitoba kept daylight time permanently, so it is at UTC−5 this winter, the same as Ontario and Quebec. Northwestern Ontario, such as Kenora, was announced to stay with Manitoba.
- Calgary and Regina share a midnight. Alberta now stays at UTC−6 all year, which is what Saskatchewan has always used in winter. Yellowknife and the rest of the Northwest Territories join them, and so does East Kootenay in BC.
- Vancouver is two hours behind Toronto, not three. British Columbia stays at UTC−7 year-round, so on December 31 the gap between the two cities is two hours instead of the usual three.
Nunavut has not announced a change, so its three regions are expected to be on UTC−5 (Iqaluit), UTC−6 (Kivalliq) and UTC−7 (Kitikmeot) this winter. See Canada's time zones for every exception.
Newfoundland first, by half an hour
Newfoundland time is the only half-hour zone in North America, at UTC−3:30 in winter. That puts St. John's 30 minutes ahead of Halifax and an hour and a half ahead of Toronto, so a family spread across the country can celebrate five times in one night:
| City | Clock at Toronto's midnight | Rings in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| St. John's | 1:30 a.m. | 90 minutes earlier |
| Halifax, Moncton, Charlottetown | 1:00 a.m. | 1 hour earlier |
| Toronto, Montreal, Winnipeg | 12:00 a.m. | — |
| Calgary, Regina, Yellowknife | 11:00 p.m. | 1 hour later |
| Vancouver, Whitehorse | 10:00 p.m. | 2 hours later |
So when St. John's celebrates, it is 10:30 p.m. in Toronto and Winnipeg, 9:30 p.m. in Calgary and 8:30 p.m. in Vancouver. When Vancouver finally gets there, it is already 3:30 a.m. in St. John's.
Midnight elsewhere, in Canadian time
Many people in Canada watch other countries' countdowns earlier in the evening. Converted to Toronto time (UTC−5) on December 31:
- Sydney, Australia (UTC+11 in its summer) reaches midnight at 8 a.m. Toronto time, 5 a.m. in Vancouver.
- London and Lisbon (UTC+0) reach midnight at 7 p.m. Toronto time, 4 p.m. in Vancouver.
- Paris, Berlin and Rome (UTC+1) reach it at 6 p.m. Toronto time.
- New York shares Toronto's midnight. Chicago shares Calgary's midnight this year, and Los Angeles shares Vancouver's, because both U.S. cities are on standard time in winter.
So on the night of December 31, the last people in Canada to reach 2027 are in British Columbia and Yukon, at the same moment as the U.S. West Coast.
Is New Year's Eve a holiday?
No. December 31 is a regular working day in every province and territory, and for federally regulated employers. The holiday is New Year's Day, Friday, January 1, 2027, which is a statutory holiday everywhere. On Thu, Dec 31, 2026:
- Banks and Canada Post are open; December 29 to 31 are regular business days for mail.
- The Toronto Stock Exchange is open: TMX's 2026 calendar does not list December 31 as a closure or early close. Trades made that day settle on Monday, January 4, 2027, so they count as 2027 trades for settlement.
- Many offices and stores close early by choice. That is up to the employer and is not required by law.
Getting there and back safely
Big city celebrations close roads and pack transit. What Toronto did last year gives an idea of what to expect:
- The City of Toronto's 2025 celebration ran at Harbourfront Centre from 10 p.m., with a 10-minute fireworks show from the inner harbour at midnight and seven waterfront viewing areas.
- The TTC, GO Transit and UP Express were free from 7 p.m. on December 31 to 8 a.m. on January 1, and the subway ran until 3 a.m.
- Private fireworks needed a permit and were banned in parks, on beaches, streets, parking lots and balconies.
The 2026–27 programs for Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, Calgary, Vancouver and other cities had not been announced when this page was checked; cities usually publish them in December. Wherever you are, plan your ride home before you go out, and check your transit agency's late-night schedule for December 31.
