There is no separate GIS calendar. Service Canada pays the Guaranteed Income Supplement with the Old Age Security pension, and both follow the same public pension calendar as the Canada Pension Plan. The supplement usually shows up on your bank statement as part of your OAS deposit rather than as its own line.
December is the month to watch: the payment comes early, on Tuesday, December 22, 2026. If you are paid by cheque, Service Canada mails cheques during the last three business days of the month, so a cheque can arrive a few days after the direct-deposit date.
The 2027 dates had not been published as of Sunday, October 18, 2026. They will be added here once Service Canada posts them.
GIS amounts for October to December 2026
The GIS depends on your marital status and your income from the previous year; for couples, it is the combined income that counts. These are the maximum monthly payments and the income limits published by the Government of Canada:
| Your situation | Annual income must be | Max per month |
|---|---|---|
| Single, divorced or widowed | Under $23,112 | $1,138.90 |
| Spouse or partner receives the full OAS pension | Combined under $30,528 | $685.56 |
| Spouse or partner receives the Allowance | Combined under $42,768 | $685.56 |
| Spouse or partner receives neither OAS nor the Allowance | Combined under $55,392 | $1,138.90 |
The income figure is the limit at which the supplement stops entirely, not a cut-off below which you get the full amount. The closer your income is to the limit, the smaller your supplement. Most people receive less than the maximum, and Canada.ca notes plainly that the maximums are not guaranteed. The Old Age Security Benefits Estimator on Canada.ca gives a personal estimate.
For couples, the amount is per person: when both spouses receive the GIS at $685.56, the household gets that amount twice.
When the GIS goes up, and when it changes for you
Two different things move your GIS:
- Quarterly indexing. The maximums are adjusted in January, April, July and October to follow the cost of living. They never go down if prices fall. The next adjustment applies from the January 2027 payment.
- Your yearly recalculation. Your own GIS is reviewed every year using your tax return. The new amount starts with the July payment and runs to the following June. In July you receive a letter saying whether your supplement is renewed, stopped, starting or resuming, or whether Service Canada needs more information about your income.
That is why the July payment is the one that most often changes, up or down, while October, January and April usually move only by the small indexing step.
Who qualifies
To get the Guaranteed Income Supplement you must:
- be 65 or older;
- receive the Old Age Security pension (the GIS cannot be paid without it, which is why people who expect the GIS usually gain nothing by delaying OAS);
- live in Canada;
- have an annual income (combined, if you have a spouse or common-law partner) below the limit for your situation; and
- not be under a sponsorship agreement.
Sponsored immigrants cannot receive the GIS while the sponsorship is in effect, unless the sponsor has died, has been imprisoned for more than six months, has been convicted of an offence against them, or has declared personal bankruptcy. Immigrants who are not sponsored can receive the GIS if they qualify for the OAS pension.
Between 60 and 64? The GIS starts at 65, but if your spouse or partner gets the GIS you may qualify for the Allowance, and if your spouse or partner has died, the Allowance for the Survivor. See OAS payment dates and amounts.
Automatic enrolment and how to apply
Most people do not fill in a form. After your 64th birthday, Service Canada sends a letter and tries to enrol you in the GIS automatically along with your OAS pension. If it cannot, the letter invites you to apply.
- Wait for the letter. If a month has passed since your 64th birthday and nothing has arrived, contact Service Canada to ask whether you need to apply.
- Apply online through My Service Canada Account once you are at least one month past your 64th birthday. If you already receive OAS, choose the application for the Guaranteed Income Supplement.
- Or apply by mail with form ISP-3025, Application for the Guaranteed Income Supplement, if you are applying for the GIS only.
Keeping the GIS: file your taxes by April 30
The supplement renews automatically, but only if Service Canada can see your income. That information comes from your federal tax return, so Canada.ca says you must file your taxes by April 30 every year to avoid an interruption. If you have a spouse or common-law partner, their return matters too, because the calculation uses combined income.
This is the most common reason a GIS payment stops in July while the OAS pension keeps arriving: a return that was not filed, or filed late. Filing is required even if you have no tax to pay and even though the GIS itself is not taxed.
If your income has dropped this year, for example because you retired or a pension was reduced, you do not have to wait for next July. Service Canada can set your payment using an estimate of your current-year income instead of last year's.
Things that can stop or change your GIS
- Leaving Canada. You cannot collect the GIS if you are outside Canada for more than six months. Contact Service Canada before you go to avoid an overpayment you would have to repay. (Your OAS pension follows different rules.)
- A change in marital status. Marrying, starting a common-law relationship, separating or the death of a spouse changes which row of the table applies to you.
- A change in income. Report it as soon as possible, along with any change of address or contact details.
- Not filing a tax return by April 30, as explained above.
Taxes and the GIS
You do not pay income tax on Guaranteed Income Supplement payments. Your OAS pension, on the other hand, is taxable, so the combined deposit you receive is part taxable and part not. You still have to file a return every year so the GIS can be recalculated.
If your GIS payment is late
- Check the date in the table above, especially in December (Tue, Dec 22, 2026).
- Check whether the whole deposit is missing or only the GIS part. If OAS arrived but the amount is lower, your GIS may have been stopped or reduced; look for the July letter.
- Wait 5 to 10 business days. Service Canada asks people to wait that long before contacting the program; cheques take longer than direct deposit.
- Sign in to My Service Canada Account to see what was issued and confirm your banking information.
- Contact Service Canada if the payment still has not arrived.
This page explains the published rules. Your own entitlement is decided by Service Canada; the GIS pages on Canada.ca and your letters are the authority on your payment.
Frequently asked questions
When is the next GIS payment?
The remaining 2026 GIS payments are on November 26 and December 22. GIS is paid with your OAS pension on the same day.
Is GIS paid separately from OAS?
No. The Guaranteed Income Supplement is deposited with your Old Age Security pension, on the OAS payment date.
How much is the GIS for October to December 2026?
Up to $1,138.90 a month for a single, divorced or widowed person with income under $23,112, and up to $685.56 each for a couple where both receive OAS.
Why did my GIS stop?
The most common reason is a tax return that was not filed by April 30, since the GIS is renewed each July from your return. Leaving Canada for more than six months also stops it.
Do I have to apply for the GIS?
Often not. Service Canada tries to enrol you automatically after your 64th birthday. If it cannot, you get a letter inviting you to apply online or with form ISP-3025.
Is the GIS taxable?
No. You do not pay tax on the GIS, but you must still file a tax return every year to keep receiving it.
Can I get the GIS if I live outside Canada?
No. You must live in Canada, and the GIS stops if you are outside the country for more than six months.
Have the 2027 GIS dates been published?
Not as of October 18, 2026. They will be added when Service Canada publishes its 2027 payment calendar.
